Postcards from California: Five Spring Destinations

Spring has sprung and the Golden State is getting into the spirit. From Los Angeles to San Francisco and everywhere in between, cruise to these top destinations to experience a range of art, culture, nature, surf and of course, wine.

Downtown Los Angeles is Happening
While sunny LA may be known for its Hollywood roots, don’t miss the new revival of downtown filled with beaux-arts and art deco buildings. Wake up early and put in your name to see artist Yayoi Kusama’s twinkly “Infinity Mirrored Room” at the Broad Museum and later pop by the boutique shops and eateries at Row DTLA or sign up for Beyond The Streets for the best in local graffiti. At night, drop your bags at the NoMad Hotel or the hip Ace Hotel.
Pair your Adventure: A creamy Coppola Reserve Chardonnay

Wine, Picnics and Rugged Nature in Sonoma
Traveling with the family? Reserve a pool cabana at Francis Ford Coppola Winery, go for a dip, nosh on pizza and thumb though the latest copies of Zoetrope:All-Story. Want to hike? Near Bodega Bay, the Kortum Trail is a 4-mile trail overlooking the craggy coast and lined with native wildflowers or drop by Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve(make sure and stay for a picnic lunch with local farm fresh goods from The Shed or Jimtown Store). Head back to the eco-chic H2 and sip vino on your patio.
Pair Your Adventure: The King Kong Cabernet is full of big, bold flavors

Trams, Zebras and Midcentury Modern in Palm Springs
Enjoy the views of Coachella Valley and Mt. San Jacinto State Park from 8,000 feet on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway or stay below for over fifty miles of hiking trails. For wild animals, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens has cheetah and zebra alongside tram rides and quiet trails. For architecture, drive by Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House and at night, the cheery colors shine at the low-slung Saguaro Hotel.
Pair Your Adventure:  Bright and balanced, opt for the Diamond Chardonnay Cans.

Hills, Art and Antipasti in San Francisco
In Golden Gate Park, stretch your legs and visit the de Young Museum housing thousands of American works and a sculpture garden complete with a James Turrell light sculpture. Nearby, The Legion of Honor, situated in a French neoclassical building, showcases European art. After the day’s end, nourish yourself at Café Zoetrope with heaping bowls of spaghetti and meatballs, rustic Neapolitan-style pizzas and your favorite Coppola wine. For slumber, the classic Fairmont Hotel sits a top one of the city’s famed “seven hills.”
Pair Your Adventure: A classic, light and fruity California Rosso

Surfs and Famers Up in Huntington Beach
This Southern California beach town is called “Surf City USA” for a reason. Check out the International Surfing Museum with memorabilia like the 16mm camera used to make the classic 60’s documentary Endless Summer. Feeling adventurous? Sign up for surfing lessons at the HB Surf School or stay dry on an all-day beach cruiser and pop by downtown Main Street’s souvenir shops. On Tuesday night, the local farmer’s market lets you pick fresh produce. To rest, find beachy vibes alive at the Kimpton Shorebreak.
