When Francis Ford Coppola’s grandfather, Agostino, was a child growing up in the small town of Bernalda in Southern Italy, he often played among ancient Greek ruins in nearby Metaponto, where thousands of years earlier stood a school run by the legendary Greek scholar Pythagoras — Pitagora in Italian. Known today for his mathematical theorem (a2 + b2 = c2), Pythagoras was more than a mathematician; he was a philosopher who sought new ways of understanding the world through mathematics, astronomy, and music theory. Growing up in the footprint of this legend, Agostino developed a talent for mathematics and music, and his Pythagorean curiosity about the nature of how things work went on to influence each generation of the Coppola family.

The composition of this blend reflects three varietals grown in three different sub-appellations of Sonoma County; Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley, Syrah from Dry Creek Valley, and Petit Verdot from Sonoma Valley. Each varietal adds unique characteristics with Cabernet Sauvignon offering dark fruits and texture, Syrah contributing fragrant spice nuances, and Petit Verdot lending weight, structure, and earthy mineral notes.

The 2016 season unfolded with a cold, wet winter that was followed by prolonged summer heat that let the fruit develop excellent flavor concentration and ripe tannins. Harvest was spread out over many weeks, creating a slow pace that allowed the winemaking team to devote more attention to each batch of fruit. This extra care is reflected in the exceptional quality of the wine. Each lot was aged separately in different types of oak and then placed into barrels again after blending for another six months.

Our 2016 Pitagora leads with plum, anise, violets, and earthy notes on the nose. Full-bodied and rich without being jammy, this vintage shows beautiful balance between lush fruit, fine supple tannins, and warm toasted oak character. The palate is lavish and layered with expressive nuances of berries, cassis, graphite, and cocoa that finishes long with a trace of minerals.
