Roanoke Ananias Pinot Noir ★ 2016

In 1587, Ananias Dare, a London tile and brick layer, set sail for North America and disappeared along with the rest of the English settlers who arrived on the shores of Virginia. According to legend, his daughter, Virginia Dare, the first English woman born to the Lost Colony of Roanoke, was transformed into a white doe and killed by a fearsome hunter. As the doe bled upon the ground, juice from nearby grapes turned red. For centuries, this tale was a staple of southern folklore. In 1865, the Garrett brothers of North Carolina, purchased the state’s first commercial winery and celebrated the legend by developing a brand of wine called Virginia Dare. In honor of this early winemaking history, the Family Coppola created the Roanoke Collection, vineyard-specific wines produced in limited quantities.

Vineyard Notes

Because of its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the Russian River Valley is greatly influenced by the coast. Fog rolls over the vineyards each evening, dropping the temperature by as much as 35 to 40 degrees. This natural air conditioning contributes to an extended growing season where the grapes are able to mature slowly and maintain a good level of natural acidity. Ananias Pinot Noir hails from the King Vineyard, located in Russian River’s Santa Rosa plain. Year after year, it consistently delivers richly concentrated fruit with amazing dark color and expressive flavors.

Winemaker’s Notes

2016 resembled vintages of nearly a decade ago where a cold, rainy winter prepared the vines for good yields. This helped prolong the season, giving the vines extra hangtime to accumulate flavor and phenolic development. Conditions were further optimized by staggered ripening, where each varietal reached maturity a week or two apart. This allowed us to devote more attention to each batch of fruit. After the grapes were pressed, the juice was placed into open-top fermenters and punched down several times a day for extraction.

Tasting Notes

Distinctly earthy and floral, 2016 Ananias Pinot Noir has an intensely fragrant bouquet. Notes of tea leaves, rose petals, berries, anise, and seasoned oak are followed by dark, rich flavors of cherries, blackberries, and cocoa. Voluptuous on the palate, with layers of texture and supple tannins, this is an opulent wine with exceptional length and complexity.
