These selections of Malbec have been used in blending for both our Director’s and Director’s Cut Cabernet Sauvignon. This year, the weight and expressive character our Malbec selections offered made them worthy of a stand-alone bottling. The 2017 growing season began with a good deal of precipitation, but after a mild spring, temperatures heated up and remained quite warm throughout the summer and fall. What characterized the vintage was smaller than average clusters with excellent concentration, depth, and weight.

The beauty of Sonoma County is the diversity of its microclimates. We like to blend lots that feature terroir distinctions such as different climates, elevations, or soil composition. Each contributes a unique profile that when blended together creates a more complex wine. For this barrel sample, we combined selections that harmonize well together and show off the striking mineral nuance that Malbec is known for.

Enjoy the Scents and Flavors

Our Barrel Sample Malbec displays a youthful, edgy quality. There is a robust structure and firm tannins that will become more supple in time. Already, one can detect sweet, rich fruit impressions reminiscent of boysenberries, violets, anise, and graphite, which is a common trait in Malbec that usually gets lost in Cabernet blends. While the oak and wood character is still very pronounced, in time, this alluring tapestry of flavors will become integrated and more nuanced.
