Director's Cut Chardonnay

Named after the version of a film which most reflects the director's vision, Director's Cut wines represent our winemaker's vision of varietal wines, which express true appellation character

Named after the version of a film which most reflects the director's vision, Director's Cut wines represent our winemaker's vision of varietal wines, which express true appellation character.

In the film business, the “Director’s Cut” emerged as a means for filmmakers to present their own creative vision of a story. At Francis Ford Coppola Winery, Director’s Cut wines were created as a way for our winemakers to craft wines that would reflect their own unique interpretation of the quintessential Sonoma wine.

With its unique wraparound label designed after a Zoetrope strip, one of the earliest moving picture devices, each Director’s Cut label is a replica of a strip from Francis’s personal Zoetrope collection.

Wine Notes

2018 experienced a traditional season where plenty of spring rain was followed by warm temperatures in June. Unlike the early harvest of the previous year, there were fewer heat spikes, so the fruit ripened more slowly and developed good weight, fragrance, and yield.

The climate of the Russian River Valley is greatly influenced by fog that rolls in each evening from the nearby Pacific Ocean. This marine layer cools the vineyards down from their daytime temperature by as much as 35 to 40 degrees, creating a condition that allows the grapes to ripen slowly and retain their natural acidity for better balance.

Once picked, our Chardonnay was whole-cluster pressed and fermented in small French oak barrels to achieve a rich, creamy mouthfeel with plentiful spice nuances.
