In the film business, the “Director’s Cut” emerged as a means for filmmakers to present their own creative vision of a story. At Francis Ford Coppola Winery, Director’s Cut wines were created as a way for our winemakers to craft wines that would reflect their own unique interpretation of the quintessential Sonoma wine.
Director's Cut wines embrace appellation specific sourcing, meticulous fruit selection, and numerous blending trials in order to capture the distinct nuances of Sonoma's microclimates.
The 2019 Director’s Cut Merlot expresses alluring aromas of black cherry, toffee, fresh plum, and black pepper on the nose. Subtle tannins add structure to the lush, juicy, ripe plum flavors with complementary notes of blueberry, mocha, and toasted bread bringing a balanced complexity to the palate.
Sonoma is known for a wide variety of climates, soil compositions, and elevations. Alexander Valley features two distinct climates with the foggy southern portion of the appellation being cooler than the north. Much of the fruit for Director’s Cut Merlot comes from our own estate where warm daytime temperatures give way to cool evenings. This temperature differential extends the growing season and helps create well-balanced fruit. Soil diversity further contributes complexity by delivering a broader range of flavors.
2019 was the first time that California has been 100% drought-free since 2011. Winter and spring rains provided sufficient water in the soil through midsummer, wit irrigation not starting until July. The vintage provided us with a mild growing season, and an average crop, in terms of quantity. Quality, however, remained outstanding.
