The connection between a vine and the soil it’s planted in creates the essence of a wine. Francis Coppola Reserve wines are vineyard-specific creations produced in limited quantities. Our winemaking team hand-selects the best lots of fruit from each vintage that capture the unique qualities of these prestigious vineyards. From these selections, we craft small-batch wines which are reserved exclusively for winery guests, Wine Family members, and those who shop with us online.
2018 Francis Coppola Reserve Pinot Noir offers classic elegance. Where the last few vintages have seen riper, sweeter fruit impressions, this year’s wine is defined by its precise, delineated red fruit flavors and intoxicating spice notes. From the bouquet emerges scents of pomegranate, strawberries, tea leaves, forest floor, and star anise. Supple tannins and toasted oak surround juicy flavors of cherries, raspberries, and bergamot, which linger on the finish.
Located in the Russian River Valley less than ten miles from the Pacific Ocean, Dutton Ranch is comprised of more than 75 separate vineyards planted in the coolest areas of the appellation. Every afternoon, fog rolls in from the coast and lowers the temperature by 30-40 degrees each evening. This climate pattern not only allows Dutton Ranch fruit to ripen more slowly and accumulate more flavor concentration, it helps the grapes retain an ideal amount of natural acidity.
The last couple of vintages have seen a return to classic seasonal patterns where a cold
rainy winter prepares the vines for warm temperatures later on. In 2018, precipitation
carried on into spring extending the growing period several weeks past the preceding
year. Fewer heat spikes this season provided larger yields of very well balanced fruit,
ripened at a nice steady pace.
