Francis Coppola Reserve wines are vineyard-specific creations produced in limited quantities from distinctive sites in Sonoma County.

The connection between a vine and the soil it’s planted in creates the essence of a wine. Each vintage, our winemaking team seeks out the most expressive lots of fruit, those that best capture the unique qualities of these prestigious vineyards. From these selections we craft small-batch wines, which are reserved exclusively for winery guests, Wine Family members, and those who shop with us online.

Wine Notes

Our 2016 Reserve Syrah exhibits notable depth and structure. Full bodied with strong yet supple tannins, the velvety fruit impressions are just the tip of the iceberg with this incredibly complex wine. Unlike the earthiness that characterized last year’s vintage, spices dominate this time. On top of rich black cherry and cassis impressions, notes of graphite, violets, pepper, anise, cloves, and toasted woods add striking flare to this sophisticated drinking experience.

We love Syrah that has a dark, stormy character and this one made from the Gould Family Vineyard just outside Sonoma Valley fits the bill. Grown on a hillside with rocky volcanic soils, the elevation of this site coupled with the temperate climate that results from wind getting pulled into the valley from this location, keeps the vineyard on the cool side. This is one of the last Syrah vineyards we harvest at the end of the year, with the extended ripening period being what contributes to the wine’s intensity.

2016 experienced a traditional season where a cold, wet winter was followed by prolonged summer heat that let the fruit develop excellent flavor concentration and ripe tannins. Harvest was spread out over many weeks, creating a slow pace that allowed the winemaking team to devote more attention to each batch of fruit. This extra care is reflected in the exceptional quality of the wine.
